Trichoepithelioma is caused by the benign proliferation of epithelial -mesenchymal cells (basal cells) of hair follicles. There are three variants: solitary, multiple, and desmoplastic. Solitary nodules are the least common and usually spare the eyelids.

Trichoepitheliomas are benign cutaneous neoplasms that occur mostly on the face. There are 2 presentations—a hereditary multiple form affecting the nasolabial sulci, nose, and forehead of young adults (Brooke–Spiegler syndrome) and a nonhereditary solitary form affecting adults.

Trichoepitheliomas typically present as asymptomatic, flesh-colored papules. They are most commonly found on the face, particularly around the nose, forehead, and upper lip. While usually painless, these lesions can occasionally become irritated or inflamed.

Desmoplastic trichoepithelioma (DTE) is an uncommon adnexal tumor usually found on the face of young women. We sought to describe the clinical and histologic characteristics of DTE and discuss management strategies for these tumors. We conducted a retrospective case series and review of the literature. A series of 17 cases of DTE is reported.
