There are seven continents in the world: Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia/Oceania, Europe, North America, and South America. However, depending on where you live, you may have learned that there are five, six, or even four continents.

The boundary between Asia and Europe is unusual among continental boundaries because of its largely mountain-and-river-based characteristics north and east of the Black Sea. Asia and Europe are considered separate continents for historical reasons; the division between the two goes back to the early Greek geographers.

The map above is a political map of the world centered on Europe and Africa. It shows the location of most of the world's countries and includes their names where space allows. Representing a round earth on a flat map requires some distortion of the geographic features no matter how the map is done.
