2023年6月1日 · When you think of the fashion of the Victorian era, corsets, petticoats, full skirts, bonnets, and top hats spring to mind. The era was defined by intricately made colorful clothing that changed to mirror the transformations and advances of the Victorian period.

Victorian fashion consists of the various fashions and trends in British culture that emerged and developed in the United Kingdom and the British Empire throughout the Victorian era, roughly from the 1830s through the 1890s. The period saw many changes in fashion, including changes in styles, fashion technology and the methods of distribution.

The Victorian fashion era began with Queen Victoria’s reign in 1837 and ended in 1901, upon her death. It marked a pivotal time in Britain’s history and around the world. In fashion, the Victorian era is an elaborate display of class, wealth, beauty, and purpose for women and men.

The Second World War made the importation of cloth for clothing virtually impossible and so clothes rationing was introduced on 1st June 1941. Rationing books were distributed to every man, woman and child in Britain. Clothing was rationed on a points system.

From 1837 to 1901, Victorian fashion underwent many changes, it was characterized by elaborate, detailed designs and an emphasis on the silhouette.

The Victorian Era saw fashion chance, sometimes dramatically, every couple of years. From wide, bell-shaped skirts over the crinoline to figure hugging styles in the 1870s, there is a lot of variety comprised within the generalising name 'Victorian Era'.
