A scaffold for a staircase would be nice, but there's no place around here that rents them out for a reasonable price. I came across an idea on YouTube to set a ladder up against a wall and then lay a board across the staircase and one of the rungs on the ladder, but there's no way I can transport a board of such length in my sedan.

Big-blue and Big-orange seem to both carry a single Werner ladder with 3 hinges so it will fold into a flat work platform. The online giant carries a wide variety of no-name versions in a multitude of lengths and of unknown quality.

So I was thinking to put a 20' ladder at the landing of the stairs or the first stair leaning onto the wall that faces the stairs. The Code defines a “stairway” as “either interior or exterior” but goes on to say “within or attached to a building, porch or deck”. (See ICC R202.1)

Jun 29, 2017 · Screw or bolt the eye into the bottom of the ladder. Screw the hook into one end of the dowel (predrill so it doesn't crack the dowel). Screw the other eye into the wall to give you a place to hang the dowel when you're not using it.
