The Ming dynasty, officially the Great Ming, was an imperial dynasty of China that ruled from 1368 to 1644, following the collapse of the Mongol -led Yuan dynasty. The Ming was the last imperial dynasty of China ruled by the Han people, the majority ethnic group in China.

This map shows the land of the Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644), which covered much less area than that of the Yuan Dynasty. The map also shows the capital city of Beijing, the Great Wall, and the modern-day borders of China and Mongolia.

The map was updated by Yan Jie, to include Ming names, as the original contained place names of the Mongol Yuan Dynasty, which came after the Ming Dynasty. These maps included information on Mongolia, Southeast Asia as well as sea routes.

The Ming Dynasty was one of the most documented eras in the history of China. Ming dynasty geography is well-written and the records have been well maintained. Chinese geography documentation began in the 5th century BC, but the geography was well advanced during the time of the Ming Dynasty.

This enormous multicolored map depicts China during the Ming dynasty (1368–1644), although it was made in Japan almost forty years after the fall of the Ming. Many Japanese scholars during this later period considered the Ming to be the last great Chinese empire, and they mourned its overthrow by the Manchu.
