To change the Map type, at the bottom left, click Layers . The legend groups items with the same properties. For example, if you add placemarks for parks and use the same green icon these will be grouped together. If you then add placemarks for rivers and use the same blue icon these will also be grouped together in the legend. The legend will then contain one entry for the parks and one for the rivers.
