So if you take the Latin verb "to live," vivo, which translates "I live," but then use the third principle part, which is vixi, you get "I lived." My Latin professor always had us think about that because if vixi is perfect tense of a completed/finished action, then to say "I lived" in Latin is also to say/imply that "I am dead."

Edit: seems like I ruffled the feathers of classical studies scholars/majors. I took 5 years of Latin in high school and was under the impression my Latin teacher was thorough with pronunciation; apparently, that may not have been the case.

2023年11月11日 · Latin phd here. “Omnia ex scrineis praeter stilum” means, loosely, “everything off your desks except a pencil.” Literally “everything out of the tablets except a stylus.” Roman schoolkids took notes by scratching them on a tray covered in wax.
