The national flag of Germany (German: Flagge Deutschlands) is a tricolour consisting of three equal horizontal bands displaying the national colours of Germany: black, red, and gold (German: Schwarz-Rot-Gold). [1]

When Germany was unified at the end of the 19th century, the national flag had stripes of black-white-red. After the defeat of the Second Reich in World War I, that flag was replaced by the black-red-yellow under the Weimar Republic. Many Germans, however, rallied around other flags they felt better represented the true German spirit.

First designed in 1867 the flag was based partially on the earlier flag of Prussia. Under the Nazi government between 1933 and 1935 Germany used the Black, white and red Tricolour, resurrected from the flag of the German Empire. In 1935 Germany adopted a different flag with a swastika on it, used between 1935 and 45.

The black, red, and gold tricolor of Germany became the official German flag after reunification in October 1990. The unity flag was symbolically installed on the Republic Square in Berlin. It measures six by ten meters and is the largest official flag in Germany.
