Should the family be financially compensated for the HeLa cells? If so, who do you believe that money should come from? HeLa cells are cells collected from Henrietta Lacks that have helped in many different medical advancements. HeLa cells helped to create in vitro fertilization, the polio vaccine, and some cancer treatments, to name a few. They were cervical cancer cells that served as an immortal cell line for scientific research.

Secondly, how can you claim compensation when you have no ownership of HeLa cells? The Lacks family claimed that they deserved a cut of the profits of HeLa cells. “…All they knew was that Gey had grown their mother’s cells at Hopkins, someone somewhere was making money off of them, and that someone wasn’t related to Henrietta Lacks.

He injected a woman with leukemia with a syringe of HeLa cells and saline solution. He later tattooed the spot where he injected the cells so he could easily find it later. He didn't tell the woman or the dozen other patients that he was injected with live cancer cells.
