On May 29, 1999, Space Shuttle Discovery became the first shuttle flight to dock with the International Space Station. Part of the STS-96 Space Shuttle mission was to resupply the ISS, so it carried the Spacehab module in the payload, filled with cargo for station outfitting, including crane parts, a satellite, and research equipment.

This week in 1999, the STS-96 crew aboard space shuttle Discovery became the first to dock with the International Space Station. Using the Integrated Cargo Carrier, Discovery delivered the Russian cargo crane, STRELA; the SPACEHAB Oceaneering Space System Box; and the American crane, ORU Transfer Device, to the space station.

On May 29, Discovery made the first docking to the International Space Station (ISS). Rominger eased the shuttle to a textbook linkup with Unity’s Pressurized Mating Adapter #2 as the orbiter and the ISS flew over the Russian-Kazakh border.

STS-96 marked the first Space Shuttle docking to the International Space Station (ISS), which was successfully accomplished on May 29, 1999 at 12:22 a.m. EDT. Astronauts Jernigan and Barry conducted a 7-hour, 55-minute spacewalk to inspect and service the ISS exterior.

One hour before docking, Commander Mark Polanski flew the orbiter in a back-flip manoeuvre to allow the Space Station crew to take photos of Discovery's heat shield.
