First, the copper plate was controlled at 200 °C in the chamber, and a thermal oxide film was formed on the surface of the copper plate by exposure to the dry air.

Copper(II) oxide can be reduced by hydrogen and its formula determined. Natural gas (mainly methane) can also be used as a reducing agent, but the reaction is much slower. The reduction with methane can be speeded up by either bubbling the methane through ethanol or by placing a piece of firelighter in the gas stream in the reduction tube.
