Jan 22, 2017 · I have been having an issue with my start menu opening with no apps, windows or otherwise, appearing. The power, settings, explorer, and account apps do not appear either. When this happens, apps on the taskbar and docked in the system tray cannot be clicked. Restarting windows explorer in the task manager will solve the problem temporarily.

Sep 8, 2015 · I agree with Lloyd. If the search window comes up as a complete blank, it makes no sense to have someone type something in the search bar and select something from the results, since there are no results! This problem just happened to me, and the only fix was to follow Lloyd's directions and kill the process called "SearchUI".

Apr 19, 2023 · After a restart all icons are back. System tray and desktop icons don't have the problem. Only items pinned to the taskbar. Red in picture is my notes. Hovering over a blank icon shows a grey transparent square with the name of the app displayed above. When not hovering over a blank icon there is a space for it, but nothing there.
