Description: The painted turtle has a smooth and attractive shell with red, yellow, and/or black patterns which makes this turtle easily distinguished from other species. The carapace (top of shell) is unique due to the large scutes which lay in straight rows across its back.

Each subspecies of painted turtle has a slightly different appearance and coloration. The eastern subspecies has a dark, olive green colored, shell, with light spots of red on the underside of the top part of the shell. The midland subspecies is similar to the eastern, but with a darker colored blotch on the underside of the turtle.

The painted turtle is easily distinguished from all other turtle species in Washington by the bright red or orange red markings on the plastron and undersides of the marginal scales of the carapace. These colorful markings are usually visible on basking turtles.
