The oblong-winged katydid is either green, tan, pink, or a dark tan or orange. Green is the most common amongst this species of katydid. Pink and tan are rare, but dark tan or orange is very rare.

Only one of about 500 has this pink pigmentation, also known as erythrism. Erythrism is a unique reddish pigmentation, usually the result of a genetic mutation, similar to the recessive gene found in albinos.

In 2002, I my kids found a rare pink katydid like yours! (We live in Berrien County, Michigan, close to Lake Michigan.) We photographed it and then let it go! It was a female. Two years later, in the same garden, we found another, a light one, which was small like yours. We kept it and it went through its morphing stage.
