The practice began in 1891 in response to the U.S. McKinley Tariff Act, which forbade the import of items that weren’t “plainly marked, stamped, branded, or labeled in legible English words.”

Another commonly seen logo has a stylized ‘komaru’ symbol (which looks like a double trident) inside a circle with ‘Noritake’ above and ‘MADE IN JAPAN’ below. There are also Noritake Nippon marks with letters RC for ‘Royal Crockery’ and marks featuring the original Japanese name ‘Nippon Toki Kaisha’ (Japan Pottery Company).

2014年9月2日 · According to Gotheborg.com this is the Takito Co. mark. The company was on business from 1880-1948. The products sold from 1891-1921 were marked with Nippon. This mark would be between 1922 and 1941. See white's book mark #56

This helps somewhat in dating pieces, although keep in mind that "Japan" and "Made in Japan" were used again after World War II.
