Mesquite is a common name for some plants in the genus Prosopis and Neltuma, both of which contain over 40 species of small leguminous trees. They are native to dry areas in the Americas. They have extremely long roots to seek water from very far under ground.

The PLANTS database provides a map of honey mesquite's distribution in the United States. The typical variety of honey mesquite is distributed from southwestern Kansas, western Oklahoma, and Louisiana, and most of Texas west to New Mexico and south to Tamaulipas, Nuevo Leon, and Coahuila, Mexico [74,101,116].

This map is best viewed from a small scale (zoomed out on the web map) since its intent is to provide only a general sense of where the forests occur and how much biomass is present. Distribution of aboveground biomass for Mesquite trees at least 1 inch in diameter in Texas.

Both species of mesquite are handsome landscape trees, but given the drawbacks of the Chilean version, it is preferable to choose the native for landscaping here. It is considered slower growing, but still grows very quickly and develops a more stable root system.
