Masking materials, also called stop-off materials, are products applied to steel in specific areas prior to hot-dip galvanizing to prevent zinc from reacting with and adhering to the steel. Masking is done for a myriad of reasons.

The tape carburizes in the galvanizing kettle and the residue that remains prevents the galvanizing reaction from occurring. This residue must be removed after galvanizing by using a stiff bristled brush.

Articles such as threaded bars may be protected by tightly wrapping a high temperature masking tape (typically silicone polyimide based) around relevant areas so as to prevent the ingress of molten zinc (see image below).

2011年3月24日 · In our experience there's no reliable method of masking. Tapes, paints, other coatings all work to a degree, but give a patchy rough finish which has never pleased any of our customers! A. Try spray galvanizing instead of hot dip galvanizing in which case you can simply mask the area you do not want to galvanize and galvanize the rest.

Masking. If certain areas of steelwork need to remain uncoated this can be achieved by masking, using high temperature tape, grease or paint. Again, the galvanizer should be consulted about any areas required to be masked.
