The principal historical seat of the Burnetts is Crathes Castle and was given to the National Trust for Scotland in 1952. However, Crathes remains the Burnett family home to which all Burnetts and those descended from Burnetts are always welcome and whom we are always pleased to meet.

2023年8月8日 · Arguably one of the finest surviving castles in Scotland, amazingly, it was occupied by the Burnett family right up until 1952! The Burnetts first came to occupy the area in 1323 thanks to the daring shown by Alexander Burnett, who fought alongside Robert the Bruce for Scottish independence from England.

From the 16th century the main residence of the Burnetts of Leys was Crathes Castle and the present Chief of the family James C. A. Burnett of Leys lives nearby at House of Crathes. The Burnetts of Leys also acquired and extended Muchalls Castle, located a short distance away near the coast, completing the work in 1627.

2024年9月29日 · The 16th-century tower house Crathes Castle is the ancestral seat of the Burnetts of Leys and includes reminders of the strong alliance with the house of Forbes. Crathes Castle was begun in the year 1553 by Alexander Burnet, 9th laird of Leys (1529-1574) and completed in 1596 by Alexander Burnett, 12th Laird of Leys.

The Clan seat is at Crathes Castle on the north of the Dee in Kincardineshire which was founded in 1533. The castle took 40 years to build and retains the traditional L-shaped form. There is also legend of a ghost at Crathes Castle.

Crathes Castle lies 15 miles west of Aberdeen and 2 miles east of Banchory, from where visitors can walk, drive, take a taxi or catch a bus. The bus stop is at the Milton of Crathes and is a 15 minute walk to the Castle. I suggest that visitors stay in Banchory and not in Aberdeen unless you have a special reason to do so.
