The Bodhi Tree ("tree of awakening" or "tree of enlightenment" [1]), also called the Mahabodhi tree or Bo tree, [2] is a large sacred fig tree (Ficus religiosa) [1] [3] located in Bodh Gaya, Bihar, India.

It was here that Siddhartha Gautama sat in meditation under the Bodhi tree, having renounced his princely life to wander and practice asceticism.

For another week the Buddha contemplated the Bodhi tree. In this place a stupa was built called Animeschalochana situated to the north of the Chankramanar. On the back of the main temple situated to the west (see picture) there is an ancient pipal tree Ficus religiosa or Bodhi tree. It was under this tree that Gautama sat for enlightenment.
