In Belize, national parks are areas designed for the protection and preservation of natural and aesthetic features of national significance for the benefit and enjoyment of the people. Therefore, they are areas of recreatitourism, as well as environmental protection. National parks are gazetted under the National Parks System Act of 1981. [1]

Currently there are 103 protected areas that form a vast national protected areas system (NPAS), with categories that encompass forest reserves, nature reserves, national parks, marine reserves, private reserves, wildlife sanctuaries, natural monuments, bird sanctuaries, spawning aggregation reserves and archaeological reserves.

Belize is home to 103 protected areas. Presently, the Forest Department manages five categories of protected areas, those being National Parks, Nature Reserves, Natural Monuments, Forest Reserves and Wildlife Sanctuaries.

The country's system of private reserves are co-ordinated under the Belize Association of Private Protected Areas. The Belize Audubon Society (BAS) was founded in 1969, [ 13 ] and oversees a total of nine protected areas, including 4 natural monuments, 2 national parks, 2 wildlife sanctuaries and 1 nature reserve.
