The AMC AMX/3 (alternate spelling: AMX III) is a mid-engine sports car produced by the American carmaker American Motors Corporation (AMC), which was presented to the Italian press in March 1970 and was to be produced in Germany by Karmann starting in 1971.

Bizzarrini’s final AMC/3 featured the hallmark of sports engineering, a mid-mounted engine and rear transaxle. The Italian firm Melara developed the new gearbox while BMW completed final testing on the roadworthy AMX/3. It seemed AMC was serious about production.

The AMX/3 was the third in a series of prototypes cars, created in a production ready form by famed Italian coachbuilders Bizzarrini, with additional input from BMW. Power was provided by a naturally aspirated 6.3 litre V8 pushing out 340bhp and an impressive 430 lb/ft of torque. 170mph was the result - an astonishing figure back in 1970.

In a desperate attempt to make up some ground to America's big three manufacturers, the American Motor Company set out to boost its reputation with an all new mid-engined supercar. The first sign of things to come was the non-running AMX/2 prototype launched at the 1969 Chicago Autoshow.
