A long-sword or great-sword style only really became practicable when full, articulated plate-armor became common for foot combat during the 1300's and 1400's. There are only sporadic accounts of such weapons being employed prior to this.

These Medieval weapons took on the name “Viking swords” from the sword blade shape and type it evolved from. From the 9th century A.D. through the 1300s, these types of swords were the most common. In the second half of the Medieval period, a much heavier and longer, “long sword” became the Medieval weapon of choice.

Wider at the base and with a deep seeted taper, the swords emerging during the 13th century were not only designed to break through the link armor of the period, but to pierce through it. Crossbows, halberds, war hammers and lances were also becoming increasingly popular weapons during the 13th century.

The term war-sword from the 1300's referred to larger swords that were carried in battle. They were usually kept on the saddle as opposed to worn on the belt. A 15th century Burgundian manual refers to both "great and small swords".

With its simple cruciform hilt, this sword is representative of the knightly sword of the Middle Ages; its basic shape did not change significantly between 1200 and 1500. The large discoidal pommel served as a counterweight to the double-edged blade and gave the fighter full mastery of a perfectly balanced weapon.
