2009年12月1日 · Today stethoscopes are a typical fixture around doctors' necks. They are commonly used to listen to the sounds of the heart and lungs as well as the flow of blood during blood pressure readings. The practice of percussion and immediate auscultation were popular in physical examinations by the early 1800s.

The stethoscope was invented in 1816 when a young French physician named René Théophile-Hyacinthe Laennec was examining a 40 year old female patient named Marie-Melanie Basset who had shortness of breath.

In 1851, the binaural stethoscope was invented by NB Marsh. He believed that the highly desired chest sounds would be much more precise with most outside noise blocked, and he was right! As time passed, stethoscopes had variations based on what they were going to be used for.

He used a stethoscope devised by Robert C. M. Bowles as the very first intraoperative heart and lung monitor. Bowles’ stethoscope improved upon its predecessors by providing better sound and a non-compressible stem (the part that connects to the tubing).
