During 2003, Cortez Joint Venture Gold Mines produced 1,065,402 ounces of gold (61% mill, 31% heap leach and 8% carbonaceous ore sale). Proven and probable mineral reserves for all the Cortez JV mines as of December 31, 2003 are estimated at 12.7 million ounces of gold with a projected mine life of 11 years.

The Cortez Complex is a series of large open-pit and underground mines, with oxide milling and heap leach processing facilities. The open-pits use conventional truck-and-shovel fleets and mining operations move between the various pits over the life of mine plan.

Wenban partnered with George Hearst to form the Cortez Gold & Silver Mining Company, which built an eight-stamp mill in nearby Mill Canyon. By 1865, three companies worked the new Cortez (pronounced Cort-us) district, and that year the mill doubled in size.

Cortez employs three different metallurgical processes to recover gold. Lower-grade oxide ore is heap leached, while higher-grade non-refractory ore is treated in a conventional mill using cyanidation and a carbon-in-leach (“CIL”) process. Heap leached ore is hauled directly to leach pads for gold recovery.
