The Chinese Civil War (1945–49) was a military struggle waged between the Nationalists (Kuomintang) under Chiang Kai-shek and the communists under Mao Zedong. The conflict led to the establishment of the People’s Republic of China.

The first post-war peace negotiation, attended by both Chiang Kai-shek and Mao Zedong, was in Chongqing from 28 August to 10 October 1945. Chiang entered the meeting at an advantage because he had recently signed a friendly treaty with the Soviet Union while the Communists were still forcing the Japanese to surrender in some places.
