The San Andreas Fault is a continental right-lateral strike-slip transform fault that extends roughly 1,200 kilometers (750 mi) through the U.S. state of California. [1] It forms part of the tectonic boundary between the Pacific plate and the North American plate .

It slices California in two from Cape Mendocino to the Mexican border. San Diego, Los Angeles and Big Sur are on the Pacific Plate. San Francisco, Sacramento and the Sierra Nevada are on the North American Plate.

The relative motion was no longer convergent, but instead mostly transform, with the Pacific Plate moving northwest with respect to the North American Plate. This change in transform motion started to form a strike slip fault at the plate boundary. This would eventually become the San Andreas fault system.
