Watch the World’s Biggest Animal Lunge for its Dinner
2017年4月21日 · Drone footage taken near New Zealand shows how blue whales lunge and feed on some of the ocean's smallest creatures. When you weigh 200 tons, even the smallest body movements require a lot of...

Mechanics, hydrodynamics and energetics of blue whale lunge …
2011年1月1日 · Here we present a kinematic analysis of blue whale lunge feeding based on data obtained from high-resolution acoustic tags. These data were then incorporated into previously published hydrodynamic models of engulfment in order to gain more insight into the energetics of lunge-feeding rorquals.

A drone shot so rare it might as well be a myth: a surface-lunge feeding Blue Whale! Prior to last summer I had never seen a Blue Whale surface lunge feeding...
Blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus) optimize foraging efficiency …
The total number of lunges across all whales (gray bars) and maximum number of lunges per dive (blue) are shown on the left, whereas the number of krill patches by centroid depth bin (white) and krill density per patch (red) are shown on the right.
Video tags reveal surprising details of blue whale feeding behavior
2017年11月20日 · Blue whales, they found, show a right-side bias in their most common feeding behavior, rolling about 90 degrees to the right side during most feeding lunges. But the researchers discovered one glaring exception.
Insight into the kinematics of blue whale surface foraging through ...
2020年4月22日 · Blue whales employ an energetically demanding lunge feeding method that requires the whales to selectively feed where energetic gain exceeds energetic loss, while also balancing oxygen consumption, breath holding capacity, and surface recuperation time.
Rorqual Lunge-Feeding Energetics Near and Away from the …
Humpback and blue whales are large baleen-bearing cetaceans, which use a unique prey-acquisition strategy—lunge feeding—to engulf entire patches of large plankton or schools of forage fish and the water in which they are embedded. Dynamically, and while foraging on krill, lunge-feeding incurs metabolic expenditures estimated at up to 20.0 MJ.
Mechanics, hydrodynamics and energetics of blue whale lunge …
2011年1月1日 · Lunge feeding by rorqual whales (Balaenopteridae) is associated with a high energetic cost that decreases diving capacity, thereby limiting access to dense prey patches at depth. Despite this cost, rorquals exhibit high rates of lipid deposition and extremely large maximum body size.
To address this paradox, we integrated kinematic data from digital tags with unsteady hydrodynamic models to estimate the energy budget for lunges and foraging dives of blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus), the largest rorqual and living mammal.
