The Siege of Vraks states that the bayonet is the standard Krieger's only close combat weapon and is sometimes humorously called their "primary weapon" by non Kreigers. Sounds like a byproduct of their WW1 imagery.

The Death Korps of Krieg is a siege specialist Militarum Regimento of the Astra Militarum and the regiments raised on Krieg seek to repent for their people's former treachery against the Emperor by displaying a disturbing disregard for their own lives in combat.

The plastic kriegers have stiletto style bayonets on the sprues, and the resin have knives in sheafs on their hips. Officially, the munitorum classes the entrenching shovel as a 'multi-function tool'. It's both club and shovel. But if it breaks, you survive & a commisar finds out it's an execution for misuse of equipment.
