Eidothea hardeniana, commonly named nightcap oak, is a species of tree, up to 40 m (130 ft) tall, of the plant family Proteaceae, which botanist Robert Kooyman recognised as a new species only recently in 2002.

Once widespread across Australia’s Gondwana rainforests, it survives today in a single, endangered population in the Nightcap Range, north of Lismore. As few as 150 mature trees remain in the wild, making this small, isolated population at very high risk of extinction.

The discovery of a new rainforest tree in the forests of the Nightcap Range in far northern New South Wales has excited the botanical world, and focused a spotlight on the spectacular Mt Warning Caldera and its World Heritage National Parks and Reserves.

The Nightcap Oak is included as Critically Endangered on the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, and is listed as an Endangered species on the NSW Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995. The Nightcap Oak is a rainforest tree from the Nightcap Range of north-east New South Wales.

The nightcap oak is a newly discovered rainforest tree which grows to 40 m high, with creamy white flowers and round dull golden- yellow fruits to 4 cm in diameter (Weston and Kooyman 2002a, 2002b).

Eidothea hardeniana Weston & Kooyman (Nightcap Oak) occurs only in New South Wales (NSW), and is currently known from one population of about 100 adult plants and about 84 juveniles/seedlings in the Nightcap Range on the far north coast of NSW.
