I tested it successfully with a ThinkPad T14 Gen 3 (August 2022 model) that has a UEFI only BIOS. Prior to this I had been using "Lenovo ThinkPad Maintenance Diskette Version 1.89 (2014)".

While there's risk in doing anything, it's pretty clear that Lenovo thinks you can update safely and sanely. One could go so far as to say Lenovo encourages you to update, by calling this a critical update.

But this still persists regardless of what I changed and I even asked a Lenovo Support Agent Jacqueline to see if she could resolve it but she stated it was a "feature" of all laptops.

From the Lenovo site: Thin Installer is a smaller version of System Update. Thin Installer searches for the update packages from a repository that you create.

2020年9月25日 · I was using the i7tm38us.exe file to update the serial number, machine type and uuid on my friends Lenovo H320 desktop computer. All was well until the end, then I got the message EEPROM Write Protected. I found a different program amidedos.exe that worked great. It changed the serial, machine type and UUID.
