As adults and subadults, Caretta caretta have reddish-brown carapaces (upper shells) with dull brown to yellowish plastrons (lower shells). Hatchlings are brown. Loggerhead turtles have large heads, and their carapace is covered by horny scutes (hard scales that cover the shell).
