OTTAWA–Mark Carney is expected to be sworn in as Canada’s 24th prime minister on Friday, according to a person familiar with the matter.Carney, the former chief central banker in Canada and England, handily won the leadership of the governing Liberal Party this past weekend.

Mark Carney is a newcomer to elected politics, with decades of experience in finance. After his landslide victory, he pledged to continue tariffs on the U.S. "until the Americans show us respect."

Canada’s next leader is a relative political newcomer, coming instead from a decades-long career in finance where he steered governments through major global crises and periods of upheaval – experience he’s hoping to now leverage as he prepares to take over from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
