This development has its roots in Marvel Comics, where Mulligan and his symbiote are a pretty major character: Toxin, the offspring of Carnage (who is, himself, the son of Venom!).

After being featured throughout the series, Toxin's final appearance to date is in Venom (Vol. 5) #28, where the symbiote saved Bren's life only to become dormant and unresponsive within him.
