CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — (AP) — Landing a spacecraft on the moon has long been a series of hits and misses.

The Houston-based company put its Athena spacecraft on the moon just after 12:30 p.m. ET. The landing site is closer to the lunar south pole than any human or vehicle has traveled before.

Firefly Aerospace’s robotic vehicle became the second privately built spacecraft to make a soft landing on the moon. It could soon be joined by two more private lunar landers.
