A party host worries that a guest who is a recovering alcoholic shouldn't be served grape juice in a wine glass; a New Years party host doesn't want guests dropping off their kids – then leaving!

DEAR MISS MANNERS: Over Thanksgiving, a relative brought a recovering alcoholic (several years sober) as a guest. He brought a bottle of grape juice as his beverage for the evening, in lieu of wine.

Granted, grape juice isn't a miracle beverage that's going to prevent your cholesterol from skyrocketing and possibly leading to heart-related issues, but it can definitely help in its own way.

But it can be alienating when you're the only sober one at a dinner party, and the insult of a crappy glass of sparkling grape juice only adds to the injury of alienation. Enter: non-alcoholic wine.
