The lobelia family is extremely diverse but there are two American natives that are hardy perennials: Lobelia cardinalis and Lobelia siphilitica. The genus is named after a Flemish botanist.

However, Lobelia erinus, about 6 inches tall and low-growing, and Lobelia cardinalis, at 36 inches tall, didn’t appear to be related at all. But they certainly are.
