Sands Bridge, commonly known as the Staley Viaduct, was held up when the proposed joints did not fit the existing conditions. Work is expected to resume soon, after design alternations are completed.

The motorway has major junctions with the M56 and M62 at Warrington, giving access to Chester, Manchester and Liverpool. It crosses the Manchester Ship Canal at Thelwall Viaduct.
