An animal bite or exposure is defined as having one's skin pierced or abraded by animal teeth or claws, or by coming in contact with animal saliva or tissue on abraded skin, eyes, or mucus membranes.

“Rabies is a fatal but preventable viral disease. It can be spread to people and pets through the bites and scratches of an infected animal,” the health department said in a Facebook post.
