Not to mention, the Norway spruce can live for hundreds of years. The oldest tree in the world, nicknamed Old Tjikko, grew in Sweden and lived to be over 9,550 years old, according to Weitoish.

The Norway spruce genome was nearly seven times longer, at 20 billion base pairs. Putting its DNA in the right order was a technical challenge because the genome includes so many repetitive segments.

The 2023 Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree is coming from Vestal, N.Y. It's a Norway Spruce and will be cut down on Thursday, Nov. 9, and arrive at Rockefeller Center on Saturday, Nov.11.
