More tornadoes could be confirmed Thursday and in the coming days as storm damage is assessed. The risk of severe weather continues through the weekend, with more storms and rain expected.

Less than three weeks after a major outbreak, another rash of tornadoes tore across parts of the South and Midwest in early April 2025. That included over 30 strong twisters.

Rain will stick around in Kentucky after severe storms hit the commonwealth Wednesday night, posing the risk of significant flooding.

One of the tornadoes traveled more than 30 miles and had a maximum width of 500 yards, according to the National Weather Service.

Severe storms earlier this week produced five EF-1 tornadoes but powerful, long-lived tornadoes aren't uncommon either in Kentucky.

A first look at storm damage across Louisville on Thursday morning showed the utter devastation to businesses and warehouses in Kentucky's largest city.

A round of severe and life-threatening storms is expected to sweep through much of Kentucky between Wednesday night and Saturday, likely bringing severe thunderstorms, tornadoes and flash-flooding. That includes possibly up to 15 inches of rain in some parts of Western Kentucky, forecasters warn.

Tornado season typically lasts from March through June, according to the National Weather Service, and Kentucky is bound to see several tornadoes each year. Weather data tracked by The Courier Journal showed at least 66 tornadoes were recorded in Kentucky in 2024.

The Kentucky Humane Society traveled across the state during times of crisis, moving animals to safety and bringing much-needed supplies.
