U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi directed federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty for Luigi Mangione, the man accused of shooting and killing Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealth Group's insurance division,

Attorney General Pam Bondi said Tuesday the Justice Department will seek the death penalty for accused CEO killer Luigi Mangione. Bondi said she will direct the interim US attorney for the Southern District of New York,

The death penalty is also banned in the District of Columbia and in 22 other states, aside from New Jersey. In New York, the death penalty was outlawed in 2004 by a state court ruling. This means that New York prosecutors cannot pursue the death penalty in the case of Luigi Mangione.
