RICHMOND, Va. -- The candidates for Virginia’s lieutenant governor are set to make history after Sen. Ghazala Hashmi won the Democratic nomination for the position on Wednesday.

Virginia Democratic state Sen. Ghazala Hashmi won a six-way primary on Wednesday to become the party’s nominee for lieutenant governor, the end to a two-day contest in which Hashmi narrowly defeated her top competitor by less than 1%.

Senator Ghazala Hashmi secured the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor of Virginia, marking a historic milestone as the first Muslim and Indian-American nominated for a statewide office. She narrowly defeated five other candidates.
