We'll be in Prague for New Year's and are considering splurging and going to the opera gala but are trying to sort out the packing logistics. I'd like any past attendees to weigh in on what to wear. Can I wear a fancy cocktail dress or do I have to go floor-length? Can my partner get away with a dark suit, of which he has many, or does he need a tux? We don't care about being the height of fashion, we just don't want to end up a thread on a "spot the American" blog post. Thanks!

You could definitely wear a cocktail dress and your partner a dark suit. You would look very appropriate and blend with the crowd! Enjoy! It sounds like a great night out.
